Landscape painter in watercolour, draughtsman .He was born at South Shields, and after some encouragement to pursue a career in art while at school attended St. Michaels Art School in the town. While there, he won Sunday Pictorial art competition, and completed his studies with many accolades for his work, and again encouragement to pursue a career in art. However, following his two years’ national service in Egypt, he felt obliged to help his family and instead applied to join an advertising agency in Newcastle as a graphic artist. During this time he also attended evening classes at King’s College (now Newcastle University), and was much influenced by tutors Victor Pasmore and Roger de Grey, but had little opportunity to indulge his early love of painting and drawing. He later worked in many other graphics studios and eventually opened his own such establishment. This was later expanded to encompass the Dean Gallery, Newcastle, and to eventually absorb his time as gallery director. For many years only an occasional painter, following the closure of the gallery in 2002, became a full-time professional artist. He died at Newcastle. His work is represented in numerous private collections around the world.
