Pink Lustre Frog Mug Sunderland/Tyneside c.1850 SOLD

Pink lustre decorated frog mug, with a sailing ship transfer and verse; “Glide on my bark the summer’s tide…”

The font of the verse is unusual and quite uncommon, and does not fit in with any other of the typically decorated wares of the Sunderland or Tyneside potteries. It is quite difficult to give a firm attribution. The lustre is very deep and quite rich, espeially around the ship transfer. This is normally associated with the wares from the Low Lights’ Pottery, North shields, of the various Carr partnerships. The spotted lustre decoration arounfd both transfers also dictate to the North Shields Pottery, however, the ship transfe is very uncommon. I sold this frog mug many years ago and was faced with the same conundrum!

The mug is in superb condition. There is a firing fault as seen above the verse transfer.

Overall, the mug is well modelled with mouldings to the top and bottom. The handle is of moulded strap form with decorative terminals. The body is clan throughout.

Sunderland, or more possbly Tyneside manufacture, c.1850.
