A documentary copper and pink lustre jug Elizabeth Barton dated 1834. The jug has a broad band of cupper lustre applied around the top, the like I have never seen on any piece of Sunderland/ North Eastern pottery. The rest of the decoration is typical of the North Shields Pottery. The date is interesting, 1834, as this falls between the two partnerships of the Northumberland Pottery, that of Cornfoot, Carr & Co., (1832-1834), and Cornfoot, Carr & Patton (1834 – 37)

Was this an experimental piece, as ware decorated like this is extremely rare? The pink lustre has been applied over a brown painted ground to give the effect of copper. Where the lustre has been applied on a white ground – pink is seen. This is evident on the base of the handle and on the inside of the rim.

The two verses; “Come my old friend and take a pot..” and “In conversation with a friend” are also very uncommon.

Some of the copper lustre has not fored well on the top of the rim, showing the buscuit body beneath. There is a tight hair crack from the rim which is more evident on the inside, alsosome minor stress cracks beneath the handle, along with a very small chip to the base of the handle. Some slight staining to the body.

An academic piece.

The jug stands 5½ inches tall to te tip of the spout (14 cms)

Stock no:g/4572

Price: £195.00

A small chip off the base – not readily noticable from the outside.

An orange lustre decorated jug with good, strong enamel colours. Ship transfer, and a transfer of the new levelled bridge, which was completed in 1859, This transfer bears the initials of William Mowat (W.M.) , lower right hand side.

Other transfers bearing Mowat’s initials have appreared on pieces manufactured by Thomas Fell of Newcastle. Mowat worked as an engraver in Dean Street, Newcastle on Tyne in the 1850′s – 1870′s.

The jug is in lovely condition, good, clean white body, typical of Anthony Scott’s later wares. Inside the body near the base, beneath the spout, are some pottery scrapings. This I believe to have been from where the space for the spout was cut, in order for the pre-modelled spout to be attached, prior to firing. Apart from this evidence in manufacturing and also a small, slight imperfection in the body beneath the spout, half way up the body, the jug in in perfect, clean condition.

The jug dates from c.1865.

Height to the tip of the spout: 5¼ inches (13 cms)

A saucer and milk jug made for the Wesleyan Chapel, in Howard Street, North Shields in 1876.

The date may have something to do with the formation of the Presbytarian Church in England in 1876.

for reference to this see:

http://northshields.urc.org.uk/?page_id=29

The saucer and jug were probably from a much larger set produced for the church. It is interesting to see that the transfers are identical in every respect, showing a fault within the original copper plate for the transfer.

The manufacture of the pieces is uncertain, whilst John Carr’s Pottery at the Low Lights, North Shields, within its very close proximity, would likely be the potter.

The jug measures just over 3 inches in height to the tip of the spout (8 cms); the saucer measures 6 inches (15.3 cms) in diameter. There ae a few nibbles off beneath the spout, otherwise both in good condition.
